Band of Brothers: Dead Man's Corner

Band of Brothers: Dead Man's Corner

This series of pictures depicts Dead Man's Corner and the Dead Man's corner museum.

This is a war-time photo that I downloaded off the internet

This house is currently the home of the DMC Museum. On D-Day, this was the headquarters of Col. Von Der Heydt, who commanded the 6th German Parachute Regiment. On D-Day, this house also served as a field hospital, and if you go there today, you'll see a fine exhibit dedicated to that aspect of the fight. Apparently, one of the German surgeons was wounded or killed, and a German medic and his assistant set up in this house, and they treated both Germans and Americans. If I remember correctly, an American medic was captured and he worked with his German counterpart for the next three days until the Americans captured this area on June 8th. During the airdrop, American planes also dropped medical equipment and that was used to treat the wounded.

Dead Man's corner got its name the following way. This intersection is actually a Y. To the right, the road leads straight east to Utah Beach. To the left, the road goes straight north to Ste Come Dumont and Ste Mere Eglise. Behind me on this shot is Carentan.

A column of tanks coming down the road from the right reached this intersection and turned towards Carentan. The first tank, a Stuart light tank, was hit right in the turret by either a rocket (Panzerfaust) or an 88 shell and the commander of the tank, Lt. Anderson was killed. The tank was disabled and Lt. Anderson's body hung out of the turret hatch for several days. Until it was cleared, men referred to this intersection as the corner with the dead guy in the tank, which quickly became shortened to Dead Man's Corner.

I will never ever disagree with a veteran who was there, but . . . Maybe someone can explain this. Don Burgett, in his book, A Screaming Eagle in Normandy, described a firefight against Germans across a road leading down to the river. That would describe the road to Carentan perfectly. However, he mentions a light tank coming along out of the bushes and and providing Burgett and his small group fire support until the tank ran out of ammo. The tank commander reported he ran out of ammo, and that he would go get more and bring help. Burgett yelled "don't forget about us" and he yelled back that he wouldn't. Burgett wrote that the tank left on the right side of the field and turned, and the tank was hit by an 88 and destroyed. He said he felt bad because the commander was such a nice guy. And that this was the tank and commander referred to at Dead Man's Corner. The only catch is that I've read about a column of tanks, not just one, and if you were out of ammo, would you turn towards German-held Carentan?

Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Chocolate Token

Medicare Prescription Drug Plan Chocolate Token

(RPI) – In a dramatic reversal, the Bush Administration has proposed scrapping its Medicare Part D prescription drug plan in favor of a more streamlined plan for easing the burden of spiraling drug costs for the nation’s seniors.

Under the new plan, titled Medicare Part D+, prescription drug cards will be replaced in favor of small chocolate candy tokens that can be exchanged at pharmacy counters for prescription medications.

Whereas the prior plan had seniors choosing from over 100 different, often confusing plans, the new proposal asks seniors to choose from one of only three prescription plans - Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, and White Chocolate.

“My critics say I don’t listen. I listen. I’m a listener. You see, that means I hear things,” said the President, announcing the new plan from the Rose Garden.

But the plan has already been criticized as yet another example of corporate welfare disguised as public policy.

"This is nothing more than a blatant handout to the chocolate lobby,” said Public Citizen’s Sandy Levinson. “And to a lesser extent, the cigar store Indian lobby. You can see they had a hand in this as well.”

Levinson was referring to a provision of the plan that makes an exception for seniors suffering from diabetes, who rather than receiving chocolate tokens, will be required to use full-size cigar store Indians.

“That thing’s bigger than I am,” said Mitsy Gables, a 4-foot 11-inch 87-pound octogenarian living alone in a suburb of Phoenix. “I don’t drive and the nearest Walgreen’s is about a mile away.”

When asked about the cigar store Indian carve-out in a press conference, President Bush was upbeat.

“People ask me all the time, ‘How can I help on this war against terror? How can I fight evil?’” said Bush “You can do so by helping your small, frail, diabetic neighbor carry her cigar store Indian down the street to her pharmacist so she can get the drugs she needs to stay alive.”

Downtown Roanoke (VA) (Images of America)

Downtown Roanoke celebrates the vibrant history of a community that lies at the heart of the scenic Roanoke Valley. From the saloons and livery stables of the late 19th century to the flagship department stores that attracted hundreds of shoppers in the late 1950s, Roanoke has experienced dramatic change. Over 200 archival images have been compiled to produce a stunning collage of the downtown area over the past century. Included are the American Theater, the Rialto, the Jefferson, and the time-altered streetscapes of Jefferson, Campbell, Kirk, and Church. This collection highlights the storied past of Roanoke through hotels, hospitals, churches, merchants, and special events, including the American Legion parades, the Diamond Jubilee, and the march of the VMI and VPI cadets at Thanksgiving en route to Victory Stadium. Downtown Roanoke is a tribute to the heritage of Southwestern Virginia's leading urban center. Today it remains a metropolitan district alive with culture and commerce, having re-emerged from the challenges of shopping malls and suburbia. The photographs in this collection, many published for the first time, provide a nostalgic look at the progress of Roanoke's historic downtown corridor.

ABC News Nightline A Matter of Choice? Town Meeting in Roanoke, VA

Is homosexuality a genetic predisposition, or a voluntary question of lifestyle? As you might expect, some gays find the question itself offensive, not just offensive, silly. Why would anybody choose, they ask, to live a life that so often makes that person a target of ridicule, contempt and hatred? Who would opt for a lifestyle in which you're often forced to choose between isolation and deception? Ted Koppel anchors a live, 90-minute town meeting from Roanoke, Virginia. DBI 9501403 Trauma Suspension Safety Strap 1 pair

What is Suspension Trauma? - The Suspension Trauma Safety Strap was designed to help a worker overcome the potential negative health impacts of suspension trauma (otherwise known as Orthostatic Intolerance). This condition can occur when a person remains suspended at height (after a fall) for even short periods of time. Suspension in a harness may cause blood to pool in the veins of the legs which can result in unconsciousness; if not rescued promptly, serious injury or death may occur. OSHA requires that employers provide for prompt rescue of employees in the event of a fall. The Suspension Trauma Safety Strap is designed to prevent suspension trauma while a worker is awaiting rescue. Safety Strap Helps Prevent Suspension Trauma. The Suspension Trauma Safety Strap allows the worker, who is suspended, to stand up in their harness and to relieve the pressure being applied to the arteries and veins around the top of the legs. The continuous loop design allows both sides of the harness to relieve the pressure being applied to the legs. The strap accommodates either having one foot or both feet in the loop at a time - it will relieve the pressure to both sides with just one foot in allowing for added movement of the legs. The strap allows for increased comfort, balance and improved circulation in the legs while suspended and waiting for rescue. Fast and Easy Installation, Operation. The two packs are compact, lightweight and easily installed to most harness sizes, styles and brands. To attach, simply choke the pack around the harness web at the hip. After a fall, the packs can quickly be unzipped, deploying the web loop and hook straps. These are easily connected and adjusted to provide a strap for the foot to conveniently step into. This allows the worker to stand in their harness and relieve the pressure on the legs while waiting for rescue.

Storm Tornado Chasing Car Truck Van Interceptor Storm Chaser

Storm Tornado Chasing Car Truck Van Interceptor Storm Chaser

Storm chaser and extreme weather journalist Warren Faidley is seen sitting in the "Archangel" stormchasing interceptor. This unique vehicle was the second tornado and storm chasing truck built by Warren. Although specialized tornado chasing cars and vehicles are common now days, in the late 1980’s Warren designed, then constructed a storm chase vehicle nicknamed the "Interceptor". This unique SUV was the world's first all purpose storm chasing and tornado chasing car built specifically for chasing, tracking, photographing and filming extreme weather and violent storms. Many of today’s elaborate "tornado chase" or "tornado proof" cars and vehicles are built for no real purpose other than to grab media attention as no vehicle can withstand the force of a 300 mile per hour violent tornado. (Potential chasers and media beware and take note!) If anyone was to drive into a tornado, they would likely be killed instantly as it is difficult to estimate a tornados ever-changing intensity. Although Warren’s chase vehicles include impact-resistant glass, a NASCAS-type roll cage and other safety equipment, they not designed to be driven foolishly into a twister.

You may have seen Warren and one of his storm chasing cars in TV advertisements or in magazine and news shows like National Geographic, The Weather Channel, Discovery HD, Life Magazine, CNN and many more.

Disclaimer: Storm chasing and tornado chasing, or any type of tornado chasing, storm photography or attempt to take tornado pictures or storm pictures is dangerous and should only be conducted by experienced storm chasers or tornado chasers.
