Valve Amplifiers, Third Edition

Valve Amplifiers, Third Edition

Morgan Jones' Valve Amplifiers has been widely recognised as the most complete guide to valve amplifier design, modification, analysis, construction and maintenance written for over 30 years. As such it is unique in presenting the essentials of 'hollow-state' electronics and valve amp design for engineers and enthusiasts in the familiar context of current best practice in electronic design, using only currently available components. The author's straightforward approach, using as little maths as possible, and lots of design knowhow, makes this book ideal for those with a limited knowledge of the field as well as being the standard reference text for experts in valve audio and a wider audience of audio engineers facing design challenges involving valves.

Design principles and construction techniques are provided so readers can devise and build from scratch designs that actually work. Morgan Jones takes the reader through each step in the process of design, starting with a brief review of electronic fundamentals relevant to valve amplifiers, simple stages, compound stages, linking stages together, and finally, complete designs. Practical aspects, including safety, are addressed throughout.

The third edition includes a new chapter on distortion and many further new and expanded sections throughout the book, including: comparison of bias methods, constant current sinks, upper valve choice, buffering and distortion, shunt regulated push-pull (SRPP) amplifier, use of oscilloscopes and spectrum analysers, valve cooling and heatsinks, US envelope nomenclature and suffixes, heater voltage versus applied current, moving coil transformer source and load terminations.

* The practical guide to analysis, modification, design, construction and maintenance of valve amplifiers
* The fully up-to-date approach to valve electronics
* Essential reading for audio designers and music and electronics enthusiasts alike

(1976) RECORDING EQUIPMENT / REPRESENTATION

(1976) RECORDING EQUIPMENT / REPRESENTATION

Notes and commentary- My first personal recording equipment was from my family home and consisted of a Tandberg model 2 reel to reel tape recorder, a Harman Kardon Festival TA-260 stereo receiver, a pair of KLH speakers and a turntable. in the late 1960's I bought a few drum beat records at Sam Goody's, I would play the drum record and play along with my Wurlitzer electric guitar ( Yes!! Wurlitzer branded their name on electric guitars manufactured by the Holman company in Neodosha, kansas) and record it with the Tandberg reel to reel. In 1972 I got my first real electric guitar, (a hadn't been sold-$250) 1965 Fender Stratocaster for my 16th birthday ( which I devalued and ruined by trying to refinish and modify it) and of course not knowing that they would become highly prized and would eventually sell for $20k and up. Next comes the gizmo's, Mu-tron III. Univox Univibe, Electro-Harmonix Big muff, Mu-tron bi-phase, Maestro octave box, Maestro Echoplex, and the MXR compressor ( which turns out to be my favorite device along with an amplifier reverb and delay unit for the sound that I most desire ) 1973 I get a Phillips cassette recorder with dolby and sound on sound recording (WOW!!) . I trade my airbrush equipment for the Ampeg B15 amplifier. 1975 I buy a Dokorder 4 track 1/4' reel to reel and what I thought was the top of the line Koss headphones, soon followed by the Teac mixer thats made for 4 track recorders and a few cheap handheld mics including two that were Sennheiser 421-like mics except they were light tan not black.

all 3 boxes are designed and built by me. and all 3 were done in the last few weeks, as well.

bottom is VoluMaster, a digital volume control and preamp. on top in green is MPDmaster, a remote controller for 'mpd', a music playback daemon.

to the right in orange is SPDIFmaster, a 4 input 2 output spdif digital audio switch.

they are all controlled by the same sony IR remote control, from a spare DVD player ;)

when you press play or pause or 'next', the green lcd box reacts to that and changes the music track as commanded. when you change the volume, the bottom orange box takes taht command. when you switch inputs, the orange box to the right takes those commands.

an entirely DIY stereo system ;)
